HIDDEN BETRAYAL
Chapter One
Gun gripped tight, back to the wall, Linc breathed slowly to settle himself. Shit. A leak. There had to be a leak within the Marshals Service. No other explanation fit. Bullets still slamming into the not-so-safe safe house were evidence enough. The witness he’d dragged out was cowering next to him. Adrenaline surging, Linc pulled out his cell and yelled, “We’re under fire. Get me backup.” He shoved the phone back in his pocket.
Odds are by the time help arrived they’d all be dead.
“What the fuck, man?” Rounds fired and his witness had lost the gangster swagger. “You marshals are supposed to protect my ass.” Joey “the Mouse” Medrano huddled beside him in the shadowed hallway. Blood dripped from a cut over Joey’s eye, adding a scarlet bloom to the teardrop etched onto his right cheek. Linc wiped the blood from his own forehead. Shots through the front windows had sent shattered glass flying.
“You’re alive, aren’t you?”
“That’s the fuckin’ cartel out there. Fuckin’ trying to kill me, man.” His voice, irritatingly high pitched—hence “the mouse”—quavered. Linc suspected the tattoos covering every available skin surface, including Joey’s eyelids, were more an attempt to appear badass than proof.
“Don’t know what happened, but we’ll get you out of this.” Linc listened intently. Where the hell was his partner? “Donny!”
Outside, tires squealed and a door slammed.
“They’re fuckin’ coming for me. You gotta fuckin’ protect me.”
He didn’t have time to marvel at Joey’s ability to use “fuck” at least once in every sentence. Linc yelled for his partner again. “Donny, you hit?”
“I’m fine.” Donny’s voice came from the other side of the wall in the kitchen. He sounded odd, like he had to force the words out. He spoke again, clearer this time. “I think we can get him out the back, through the gate. Take him out through the alley.”
“I ain’t goin’ through the fuckin’ alley. They’ll know you’ll fuckin’ go that way.”
“Shut up. Let me think.” Footsteps rushing the front door decided for him. Grabbing Joey by the collar, Linc pulled the other man with him into the kitchen. And came to a skidding stop. “Shit, Donny. Lower your weapon before you shoot me.”
His partner didn’t lower his weapon. “Sorry, Linc.”
The front door crashed against the wall.
“What the—”
Even as Linc raised his gun, a muzzle flashed with a sharp cracking sound. The instantaneous punch to his chest sent Linc reeling. A second flash and the world went dark.
***
“Wake up, Lincoln. Wake up, baby.”
The warm caress on his forehead soothed, almost enough to lull him back into the gray.
“Oh no you don’t. Stay with me this time.”
“Mom?” He must have actually spoken, because the hand against his skin stilled. He blinked open his eyes to see his mother’s face crumble. Shit.
“Good job, you made Mom cry.”
His gaze traveled around the hospital room before resting on the tall woman standing on the other side of the bed. Despite the jibe, his sister’s lowered brows over serious blue eyes and clenched jaw screamed worried. Couldn’t mistake that. He would have tried for a snide comment but his throat felt like he’d swallowed rocks.
“Water.”
His mother dabbed her eyes with a tissue and dipped her face to kiss his forehead before reaching for a plastic cup with a straw. “You bet, sweetie.”
He swallowed the icy water with relief. His gaze sought out his sister’s. “What happened?”
“Your double-crossing, snake-in-the-grass, backstabbing partner is what happened.”
“Ellie, not now. Your brother needs to rest.” Margaret Bollinger’s voice held the same tone that had kept a teenaged Linc from straying too far out of line.
“Did he get Joey?” They needed the pathetic bastard to testify against the crime boss of the Zecena cartel. And the trial started in less than two months. But more than that, it had been Linc’s job, his sworn duty, to protect the witness.
The hospital door swung open before Ellie could answer. Two men entered, completing the family. Linc’s brother, Seth, and their stepfather, retired Chief Deputy US Marshal Archer Bollinger. Like Ellie, Seth wore his Marshals’ badge hanging from a chain around his neck. His brother’s face might have been carved from granite. Seth didn’t do feelings. Arch Bollinger didn’t give much more away, other than a decided air of tension. Seeing that Linc was awake, Arch crossed the room to put an arm around Mom’s shoulders. “Glad you’ve decided to stay with the living, Lincoln.”
“What the hell happened?” Linc’s voice cracked like an old man’s.
“What do you remember?” Seth’s slate-gray eyes narrowed.
Wishing for a dose of his brother’s cool focus, Linc tried to shake his head to clear the lingering fuzziness, but even that small motion resulted in a throbbing that made him wince. He found the button to raise the head of the bed so he was sort of sitting up, clenching his jaw at the pain in his chest that accompanied the movement. He rasped out the words. “Enough to know Donny shot me. I want to know what happened to my witness.”
“Medrano’s dead.” Seth’s clipped words fell like bricks.
“Shit. God damn, son of a bitch.” He held Seth’s gaze. “I lost a witness.”
“This isn’t on you, Linc.” Anger whipped through his sister’s voice. “Donny Bertola owns this one.”
“I’m sworn to protect my witness. I told the little shit I’d get him out of there alive.” The Marshals Service had never lost a witness who’d followed the rules. That made him the first. The weight of his failure settled over him like an iron blanket. “He’s dead. That’s on me.”
Ellie looked ready to argue the point, but Seth cut in. “Chief Deputy Montrose said he’d be in tomorrow morning to take your statement. You up for it?”
“I will be.” He’d been awake for a few measly minutes and Linc felt like he’d run a full marathon. Exhaustion with an added layer of abject failure dragged at him. His mother held up the straw and he took another sip of water, and then directed a question to his brother. “What happened with Donny?”
“He’s on the run. We’ve got his laptop, phone records, bank records. The usual. Only thing we know for sure is they got to him.”
A tiny nurse in polka dot scrubs and a cap of pewter hair whisked into the room. “Sorry, folks, it’s time for the shift change. You all will need to step out.” She assessed Linc with a shrewd gaze. “And it’s time for Mr. Jameson’s meds. You’re welcome to come back in forty minutes or so.”
Margaret kissed him again, squeezing his hand like she couldn’t stop touching him. Linc was grateful when Arch gently urged her out the door. Ellie took his face in her hands and kissed his cheek. “You scared me.”
“I scared myself.”
“Don’t do it again.” She left, and Seth moved closer to the side of t
he bed.
“You’re not going to kiss me too, are you?”
“You wish.” Seth paused, then continued, voice deeper than usual. “We’re tracking Donny, Linc. We’ll get him.”
Chapter Two
Linc sat in the driver’s seat of his Jeep Wrangler to wait out the storm, watching the rain come down in sheets. Listening to the drumming on the roof, he hoped like hell his tent would hold up against the deluge. He narrowed his eyes to peer at the campsite across the road from his and wondered how the Celtic goddess would deal with the inclement weather.
She'd driven in the day before in a Subaru Outback, then proceeded to amaze him. He had to admit he’d been entertained watching her unpack her vehicle and organize her site with the efficiency of an army quartermaster. Her tent went up with a minimum of fuss, looking roomy enough for a scout troop. Loaded plastic bins and an ice chest went in the bear-proof locker, then she’d spread a plastic tablecloth over the picnic table and secured it with metal clips. Wouldn’t do to eat on bare wood. Dinner for him? Canned chili heated over his tiny backpacking stove. For the Celtic goddess? Something chopped, shredded, and sautéed over a Coleman camp stove that smelled truly amazing. And no doubt tasted a damned sight better than canned chili.
What had about killed him was the coffee. For his morning dose, he’d made do with freeze-dried granules spooned into water he’d been too impatient to let get hot enough. He wasn’t even sure it really was coffee, the flavor more how he thought wood pulp steeped in motor oil might taste. The redheaded goddess brewed her coffee in some fancy-looking pot. The aroma drifting into his campsite had nearly sent him over to beg for a cup, only the knowledge he’d have to actually talk to another human being, even one as compelling as the Celtic goddess, stopping him.
The pounding on the roof eased, then tapered to the occasional drip from the trees. The woman’s tent flap flipped open and she emerged under the little awning sheltering the front of her tent. He shifted uncomfortably as lust gave him a sneaky hit to the gut.
